Frog Effigy Pipe, Woodland Culture, ca 300-800 A.D.
Carved in realistic detail this pipe shows the intimate knowledge the prehistoric artist had of his subject. An excellent representation of totemism in which the natural takes on supernatural powers and a kinship is expressed. Of rare type the frog sits on a square base, carved three dimensionally, in heavily patinated brown siltstone. Cleanly repaired from four large fragments. Found in Kentucky on July 17, 1932. Height 3 3/4” in. (9.5 cm.)
