Mayan Mirror with Carved Image of God K, Classic 650 AD, Peten area, Guatemala
A beautiful and rare slate mirror back carved with an image of God K, K'awiil. He is depicted here wearing a feathered headdress and has mat glyphs carved on his cheek. God K was the deity associated with the fertility of the ruling class, lightning and serpents. The back of the mirror is textured so that carefully crafted pyrite parts could be adhered and buffed to a mirror like sheen. Provenance: Ex Castillo, Private American Collection prior to 1968. Measures 5" diameter x 1/4" depth.
