Olmec Blue Green Jade Maskette, Mexico, Preclassic, B.C. 1500
A small mask of rare blue green jade prized by the ancient Olmecs. Distinguished by a "baby face" with cleft lip, deeply sunken eyes, pierced nostrils, pieced rectangular engraved ears, and downward curving lip drilled at the corners. Pierced twice at the top and bottom of the mask. The whole in the midst of transformation. Ex Throckmorton colection. 3 1/2" height.
