Olmec Jade Figure, Middle Preclassic circa 1100 BC, Ex Sotheby's
A magnificent Olmec jade figure holding a tapering celt flat against his chest. The eyes are elongated and in typical Olmec fashion the lips are curved downward. Hatched bands are carved along the crested helmet, wrist, waist and ankles. Carved from a beautiful light green jade and drilled between the arms for suspension. Custom mount included. 6 5/8" height. Ex Sotheby's, May 19th, 1992 with a $12,000-$18,000 estimate at that time.
