Description

Mississippian Shell Mask, Tennessee, ca 1200 AD

A beautiful Mississippian shell mask carved from a Busycon shell traded from the Gulf of Mexico.  The "weeping eye motif" is engraved on both eyes.  Interestingly, these are the same marking on the Peregrine Falcon and is understood by archaeologists to be the symbol of a warrior cult within the Mississippian society.  This imagery has been found at the main epicenters including Etowah Mounds, Cahokia, and the Spiro Mounds.  The mask is in excellent condion with archaeological deposits.  Jackson COA included.  Measures 5 1/2" height x 4 3/8" width.
