Mississippian Shell Maskette, Weeping Eye Motif, Tellico Plains Site, Tennessee
A wonderful prehistoric Mississippian shell maskette with engraved "weeping eye" motif. This is the same motif found on Peregrine falcons and archaeologists theorize the motif represented a warrior cult in the Southern Ceremonial Complex. Both eyes are drilled for suspension and this would have likely been used as a pendant. The original archaeological deposits remain on the surface. 2 1/2" height x 2 1/4" width.
